Under-17 Asia Cup Cricket begins in Bangladesh |

Dhaka-- (UNB) - The 10-team ICC/ACC Under-17 Asia Cup Cricket tournament is set to begin today (Thursday) at three separate venues in the city and in Savar despite hartal called by the main opposition. Three matches are on the cards for the opening day (Thursday) - hosts Bangladesh take on Nepal at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Sri Lanka face Oman at the BKSP ground one in Savar and Pakistan play Kuwait at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. Another match of the inaugural day between India and United Arab Emirates (UAE), scheduled at BKSP Ground-two in Savar, has been deferred for two days due to late arrival of India. The Indian team, which missed their today's trip to Bangladesh due to unavoidable circumstances and now expected to reach the capital today (Thursday), will play UAE on Sunday (Feb 18), the rest day of the meet. The 45-over-a-side matches will start at 9:30 am. The winning side will get full two points while both teams will share one point each in case of "no result". Ten teams, split into two groups, will compete for the Youth Asia Cup at six different venues in the city and in Savar. Participating teams: Group A - India, Sri Lanka, UAE, Malaysia and Oman. Group B - Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, Nepal and Kuwait. Four more foreign teams - Oman, UAE, Sri Lanka and Nepal -reached the capital yesterday(Wednesday) to take part in the tourney. Singapore, the other participant of the 10-team fray, is expected here later tonight (Wednesday night). Three teams from Oman, UAE and Sri Lanka, each with 18 members, reached the city last (Wednesday) morning while a 19-member Nepalese team arrived in the afternoon. Earlier, three foreign teams - Pakistan, Kuwait and Malaysia - arrived here on Tuesday. Two officials of the tourney - ICC Cricket Ambassador Ravi Shastri of India and ICC development manager Andrew Eade -reached the capital yesterday(Wednesday) while two others - tournament director Anil Kalaver of Singapore and ICC development manager for Asia region Nasim-ul-Ghani of Pakistan - came Tuesday. Meanwhile, all the teams except Nepal made practices at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in three sessions - morning, noon and afternoon - today. |
